About 80 families who belonged to an indigenous group in Gattaran, Cagayan received relief goods from the Science Department as part of its corporate social responsibility on Saturday, November 05, 2016.
Spearheaded by Regional Director Sancho A. Mabborang, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 02 extended some assistance to aetas of Sitio Padungsol, Barangay Basao in the municipality of Gattaran who were greatly affected by the recent hit of Super Typhoon Lawin in Cagayan.
Each household received a package good for two-day meals which include rice, coffee, sardines and noodles. Aside from goods, some clothes were distributed during the operation.
Barangay Captain Danilo Madrid expressed his gratitude to DOST. “Agyaman nak kadakau, saludo ak kadagituy impaayyu nga goods para ti agta tau dituy Sitio Padungsul,” he said during their short conversation with RD Mabborang after the activity.
RD Mabborang assured to help their community under the program dubbed as “Community Empowerment thru Science and Technology” or CEST. He said it is planned that on 2017, Sitio Padungsol will become one of the recipient communities of CEST.
This program aimed to help the poorest of the poor communities in the country through Science & Technology interventions in health and nutrition, water and sanitation, basic education and literacy, livelihood/economic enterprise development, and disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.
Now, DOST’s CEST program in Region 02 has recorded 16 beneficiary communities including the municipalities of Alicia, Caloacan, Delfin Albano, Brgy. Buenavista, Angadanan, and Brgy. Babaran, Echague, in Isabela; Brgy. Minanga, Gonzaga, Brgy. Caroan, Gonzaga, Brgy. Minanga, Sanchez Mira, Tokitok, Sanchez Mira, and Sta. Praxedes in Cagayan; Brgy. Baresbes, Quezon, Brgy. Banganan, Aritao, and Kayapa, Nueva Vizcaya; Brgy. Sangbay, Nagtipunan and Brgy. Macate, Diffun in Quirino and, Babuyan Claro, Calayan, and Diura, Mahatao, Batanes. (KC D. Sucuano/DOST R02-PAI)
