September 08, 2021 – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 02, together with the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Region 02, headed the Regional Geographic Information Network (RGIN) Geoportal Innovation Hub Replication Project launch.

The RGIN is created to establish a collaborative network of regional and provincial Geographic Information System (GIS) centers. It aims to provide accurate and up-to-date geospatial data and information. Aside from that, it aims to facilitate easy access to geographic information and services.
Six pilot regions in the Philippines were chosen as sites for the Innovation Hub, namely region 01 for Luzon, 06 and 08 for Visayas, 09, 12, and 13 for Mindanao. The regional directors from the respective regional offices of NEDA and DOST signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) regarding their partnership.
DOST Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña first recommended the establishment of RGIN Geoportal Innovation Hubs in the regions on August 27, 2019. This was during Cagayan Valley’s launching for its own RGIN Geoportal Innovation Hub.
“As DOST Secretary, it is my goal to promote the use of science and technology, for us to give efficient and relevant services in each region. May the RGIN Innovation Hubs provide solutions to the respective challenges in our homes.” Sec. de la Peña said.
Moreover, NEDA Secretary, Karl Kendrick T. Chua, expressed his support for the replication project. Through his leadership, NEDA committed in sharing resources for the operationalization of the Innovation Hubs.
“We believe that the use of technology, such as the RGIN Geoportal is the way forward in improving our efficiency, effectiveness, and comparative advantage. I am optimistic that this will play a vital role in identifying strategies and interventions to fast-track economy recovery.” NEDA Secretary, Karl Kendrick T. Chua, also mentioned.
DOST undersecretary Sancho A. Mabborang and NEDA undersecretary Mercedita A. Sombilla were also present in the launch. Former DOST 02 Regional Director Mabborang also recalled his support to Sec. de la Peña’s initiative in establishing regional RGIN Geoportal Innovation Hubs across the Philippines.
